Abdomen MRI: With and Without IV Contrast

Before Your Exam

• Do not eat or drink anything for 4 hours before your exam.  

• You may take medicines will a small sip of water, unless told otherwise.

• Bring the ID cards for any implanted devices you may have.

• If you wear an external monitoring device or medicine patches, they will need to be removed before your exam.  

  • Some monitoring devices (like glucose monitors) cannot be reused after removal. 

  • Check with your provider.

• Tell your doctor if: 

  • You are claustrophobic.

  • Have pain when lying flat for more than 30 minutes.  

• If you have children with you: They cannot wait in the waiting room or in the atrium without an adult. We cannot supervise children during your exam.

• Leave all jewelry and valuables at home.

When You Arrive

• We will ask you to fill out an MRI Safety questionnaire. 

  • Or you may fill it out in MyChart before your visit.

• The MRI technologist will explain your exam and answer your questions.

• We will give you a hospital gown and paper shorts to wear for the exam. You will need to remove all your clothes, including undergarments.

During the Exam

• If contrast is needed for your exam, we will place an IV to give the dye.

• The scan should take 45-60 minutes. You should plan to be here 1-3 hours.
