How to Take Buprenorphine

 

It is important to take your medicine as ordered. This will help you get the most out of the treatment and keep your drug levels stable. You may take your medicine on a full or empty stomach.  

 

Step 1	Sit up with your chest leaning forward – like you sit when you look at your phone.
Step 2	Place the film or tablet under your tongue.
Step 3	Start your timer. You can use the one on your phone. This will let you find out how long it takes the medicine to dissolve. Each person is a little different.
Step 4	Let the medicine fully dissolve. Don’t swallow yet! This is why leaning forward helps. You will not feel the need to swallow as much.
Step 5	Once the medicine is fully dissolved, check how long it took on your timer.  Again, this will vary from patient to patient.  You must always leave it in your mouth for at least 10 minutes. But it may take up to 20 minutes to fully dissolve.
Step 6	Once it dissolves, swallow.

 

Set a 30 minute timer, again on your phone so you know when it is OK to do these things. This is very important to let your body to absorb the medicine! The medicine is still being absorbed for 30 minutes after you swallow. We want your medicine to work to its full potential!
