Clopidogrel Bisulfate Oral Tablet

Clopidogrel (kloh PID oh grel) helps to prevent blood clots caused by platelets sticking together. It is used to prevent heart attack, stroke, or other vascular events in people who are at high risk. It helps to stop blood clots from forming in cardiac stents.

What should I know about taking this medicine?

  • Take it by mouth with a glass of water, with or without food. Follow the directions on the prescription label.

  • Overdose: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact a poison control center or emergency room at once. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

  • Give your doctor a list of all the medicines, herbs, non-prescription drugs, or dietary supplements you use. Also tell your doctor if you use tobacco, alcohol, or illegal drugs. These may interact with your medicine.

  • Keep this medicine at room temperature. Store it away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep out of the reach of children.

  • Do not stop taking your medicine unless your doctor tells you to.

  • Tell your doctor and seek emergency treatment if you have any of the signs below. These can be signs that your condition has gotten worse.

    • breathing problems

    • changes in vision

    • chest pain or pressure

    • severe, sudden headache

    • trouble speaking

    • sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg.

  • If you are going to have surgery or dental work, tell your doctor or health care professional that you are taking this medicine.

  • Certain genetic factors may reduce the effect of this medicine. Your doctor may use genetic tests to determine treatment.

What side effects may this medicine cause?

Tell your doctor right away if you develop any of these side effects:

  • signs of allergic reaction, such as: skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue

  • breathing problems

  • changes in vision

  • fever

  • signs and symptoms of bleeding such as: bloody or black, tarry stools; red or dark-brown urine; spitting up blood or brown material that looks like coffee grounds; red spots on the skin; unusual bruising or bleeding from the eye, gums, or nose

  • sudden weakness

Some side effects usually do not need medical attention. Tell your doctor about these if they develop or continue to bother you:

  • constipation, diarrhea, or stomach upset

  • headache; pain in back or joints
