How to Crust Using Stoma Powder and Skin Barrier
Crusting is a technique using stoma powder and barrier film to protect open skin beneath the ostomy pouch.
Step 1: Clean and dry the skin near the stoma.
-
Wash with water. Then let it dry.
-
Don’t use baby wipes, foam soap, lotions, or alcohol near the stoma.
|
 |
Step 2: Apply stoma powder
-
Sprinkle a little powder on any raw and wet skin.
-
Brush or tap off the extra powder.
-
The powder should only stay on open areas – not on healthy skin.
|
 |
Step 3: Apply the barrier film.
-
For barrier film pad, gently dab over the powder to seal.
-
For barrier film spray, lightly spray the whole area.
|
 |
Step 4: Let it dry.
-
If it dries, a white crust will form.
-
If the skin is still wet, you can repeat one more time.
-
If there’s too much crusting, the pouch may not seal.
|
 |
Step 5: Apply the pouch.
-
Once the crust is dry, put on the pouch system.
-
When the skin heals, you may stop crusting.
