How to Use a Vaginal Dilator
What is a vaginal dilator?
It is a plastic tube or cylinder with a rounded end. It is used to stretch (dilate) the vagina.
Why is using a vaginal dilator important?
-
It is often needed after radiation treatment to the vaginal area. You should use it several times a week to prevent scar tissue from forming in your vagina.
-
It will work best if you start using it early to prevent vaginal shrinkage. If you wait, your vagina may be too tight and the dilator will not work as well.
-
You will need to do this the rest of your life. Scarring from radiation can form over many years.
-
We recommend 3 times per week for about 20 minutes each time.
Is there an alternative?
The only real alternative is to have sexual intercourse several times a week. If you go several months without sexual intercourse, you need to use the dilator.
How do I use it?
Follow these steps when you will have at least 15 minutes to yourself.
-
Put a water-based gel (such as K-Y Jelly) on the rounded end of the dilator.
-
Lie down on your bed.
-
Gently and slowly place the dilator into your vagina. If your vagina feels tight, hold the dilator still while you tense and relax your vaginal muscles (Kegel maneuver).
-
As your vagina relaxes, push the dilator in further. You may need to repeat tensing and relaxing your muscles several times. Some women find it helpful to bear down as if having a bowel movement.
-
Place the dilator as deeply as is comfortable. Then leave it in your vagina for about 10 minutes. You may want to read or watch TV to pass the time. If the dilator slips out, reposition it but you may have to hold it in place.
-
After about 10 minutes, remove the dilator. Wash it with mild soap and water. Be sure to rinse it off completely. Any leftover residue may irritate your vagina the next time you do this.
